Why API Pagination Design Matters More Than It Looks

Pagination looks like a simple backend detail.

An API has too many records to return at once, so it sends them in smaller groups.

The design choice becomes more important when datasets change frequently.

Offset pagination is easy to understand.

A client requests items 1–20, then 21–40.

The problem is that new records can be inserted between requests.

This may cause duplicates or missing items.

Cursor-based pagination can reduce that problem.

Instead of requesting “page three,” the client asks for records after a specific position or identifier.

Pagination also affects performance.

Returning thousands of records at once increases response size and database work.
